Painters and Decorators in Clapham

Victorian terraces around the Common, Old Town flat conversions and the Abbeville village streets.

We work across Clapham most weeks — the streets running off Abbeville Road, the terraces backing onto the Common, and the big Old Town conversions. It is close enough to base that we can come and look at a job the same week you call.

The houses in Clapham

Clapham is mostly 1870s to 1890s terraces: two storeys with a bay, or three with a half-landing return. That age of house brings a predictable set of jobs. Ceilings are lath and plaster and will have cracked along the joists at some point. Original cornice and ceiling roses are usually still there but clogged with a century of paint, so they need cutting in by hand rather than rolling. Front rooms nearly always have a picture rail, and the run of it is where a careless decorator gives themselves away. The flat conversions around the Old Town are a different job again — newer partition walls that take paint easily, alongside original party walls that do not.

Parking, permits and access

Almost everything in Clapham sits inside a Lambeth controlled parking zone, operating on weekdays. Lambeth issues trade permits by the day for work at a specific address, and we arrange and pay for those ourselves — the cost is in your written quote, not added afterwards. The narrower Abbeville streets can be genuinely difficult to unload on, so for bigger jobs we tend to bring materials in one early drop rather than parking up all day.

Conservation areas and consents

The Clapham Common, Old Town and Abbeville areas are all covered by conservation area designation. In practice that matters for exterior work rather than inside: changing the colour of a front elevation, or the windows, can need consent. Inside your own home you can paint what you like. We will flag anything that looks like it needs checking before ordering paint.

Clapham houses are similar enough that we can usually tell you roughly what a room will cost over the phone, and close enough on the survey that the written price does not move afterwards. The variables that actually matter are ceiling height, how much original plaster detail survives, and whether anyone has previously painted woodwork in oil gloss — which yellows, and needs more preparation to cover.

Clapham questions

How quickly can you start a job in Clapham?
Usually within two to three weeks for a single room, longer for a full house in spring and summer. We can normally survey within a few days of you calling, and the written price follows inside 48 hours.
Our ceilings are original lath and plaster. Can they be saved?
Most can. Hairline cracking is normal and gets raked out, taped and filled. Where a ceiling is actually bowing away from the laths or sounds hollow over a wide area, overboarding and skimming is the honest answer — we will tell you which one you have.
Can you match the existing cornice paint?
Yes, and we usually recommend not matching it. A century of paint build-up in original cornice tends to look grey rather than white. Freshly cut in, the same nominal colour reads completely differently, and the detail comes back.
Do you cover the flats around Clapham Old Town?
Yes — conversions are a large share of what we do there. If the building has a managing agent and communal areas are involved, we will need their sign-off for access, which we are happy to arrange.
