Plastering and repairs

Skimming, crack repairs, blown plaster and damp staining — the work that has to happen before painting.

Painting a bad wall does not fix the wall. Where a surface is past filling, it gets skimmed; where a ceiling is bowing away from the lath, it gets boarded. We would rather tell you that at survey than paint over it and hope.

The order things have to happen in

Plaster, then dry, then mist coat, then decorate. Compressing that timeline is the single most common reason a redecoration fails within a year. If a job needs plastering, the quote will show the drying days as part of the schedule rather than pretending the work takes less time than it does.

Common questions

How long does new plaster need before painting?
Four to seven days for a skim in a warm, ventilated room, longer in winter or on a solid external wall. It needs to go from dark brown to an even pale pink all over. Painting it early traps moisture and the paint will peel.
My ceiling has a crack that keeps coming back. Why?
Usually movement, and usually the joint between two boards or the edge of a lath ceiling. Filling it again will not hold. Taping the joint properly, or overboarding, is what stops it.
Can you get rid of Artex?
We overboard or skim over it rather than scrape it. Artex applied before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, so it should not be sanded or scraped at all — covering it is both safer and a better finish.
