A stairwell ceiling that had been filled three times and cracked three times. Overboarded and skimmed, then decorated — the crack has not come back.

The previous three attempts had all been filler. The crack was at the joint between the original lath ceiling and a later plasterboard patch, and it moved with the weather, so filler was never going to hold it.
Overboarding across the whole ceiling and skimming gave a single continuous surface with nothing to open up. Two extra days and it is a permanent fix rather than an annual one. Access over a stairwell was the other cost — a proper platform rather than a ladder, which is not optional at that height.
